When CCTV pays for itself immediately
- Pre-purchase due diligence. Buying a commercial property with underground stormwater older than 25 years without CCTV is buying a lottery ticket. A $1,500 inspection has flagged $60,000 corrective scopes for our clients more than once.
- Chronic blockage or flooding after cleaning. When two vactor visits haven't fixed it, camera the run. Nine times out of ten you'll see roots, a sag, or a partial collapse at a specific joint. Now the repair scope is exact instead of exploratory.
- Pre-5-year recertification. Cheaper to camera the network before the PE walks the site than to have them flag "condition unknown, recommend CCTV" on the report. Same test, better sequence.
- After a DERM or MS4 notice. The closeout package lands harder with footage than without. See our DERM NOV playbook.
- Any restaurant or industrial lateral you've never looked inside. FOG and hydrocarbon coatings are graded by thickness on camera; that grade decides whether hot-water jetting is enough or a mechanical descale is needed.
When it's not worth it
- The pipe is new (under 10 years) and flowing clean. Nothing to see. Skip it.
- You already know you're rebuilding the structure. If the scope is set and the crew is coming, footage of the interior doesn't change what happens. Spend the money on the repair.
What a good CCTV report gives you
Continuous footage in MPEG format, a distance-stamped defect log (root intrusion at 34 ft, offset joint at 51 ft, standing water pool at 67 ft), still images at each defect, pipe material and diameter noted, and a defect severity grade using NASSCO/PACP language your engineer will recognize. Anything less and you're paying for a video, not a report.
